Plain Vanilla Bakery, Tiong Bahru, Singapore

Untitled

Boasting a chic, open, minimalist aesthetic, this bakery is reknowned for being one of the best cupcake bakeries in Singapore- and for good reason. The cupcakes are to die for. We tried earl grey and lavender, chocolate hazelnut, and vanilla cupcakes. They were perfect, light, fluffy, not too sugary, definitely worth the trip to find it. The bakery is suave too- it’s all open so you can watch the morsels being made. There’s local homewares for sale there too, a little swingset out the front and a huge workspace around the side.

Plain Vanilla Bakery, Tiong Bahru, Singapore

Call me a pleb, but sometimes I don’t understand the hype around cupcakes. That’s probably because I haven’t had the real deal. These cupcakes- they were something else. Earl Grey and lavender, chocolate and hazelnut, and vanilla bean. We were recommended a visit to this bakery through our Lonely Planet travel guide and we were not disappointed. The aesthetic is chic minimalism, so clean and relaxed. The cupcakes come by the dozen in a range of conventional flavours – so you know they’re mastering the basics. If you go, you’ll see the light.

Hanmer Springs Bakery Cafe, NZ

Hanmer Springs is a quaint little boutique town. This bakery fits right in to the image; snow capped mountain, family fun activities and hot chocolate with tendrils of steam curling skyward. Honestly, this cafĂ©  isn’t the most esthetic on the block but food really is to die for.

Their croissants are just right, and their pre-made sandwiches are delish (just the way my grandma made them!). We tried a few desserts too, they were perfect and hit the spot after a day of exploring.

It’s underrated and overlooked, but I guarantee you’ll find something you like, and it’s a local hotspot  too!
